Big Time Big-Screen Bollywood at Jaipur’s Raj Mandir Cinema

The perfect way to spend a hot, October afternoon in Jaipur: a high budget production complete with gorgeous Indian superstars, a passionate love story, epic choreography, action, violence and popcorn. All showcased in the world-famous Raj Mandir Cinema.

Situated on the Bhagwan Das Road, the meringue-shaped auditorium opened in 1976, and has become a popular symbol of Jaipur. The theatre is equipped with the latest technology in sound and projection with Dolby Atmos and SLS speakers.

The lobby views are alone worth the visit, sumptuously art deco, or the Indian version. It seats about 1300 movie-goers, making it one of the largest cinemas in India.

Which is saying something.

I saw the blockbuster 2023 release of “Jawan” starring India’s favorite bad boy/hero, Shah Rukh Khan.

Referred to in the media as the “Baadshah of Bollywood” and “King Khan”, he has appeared in more than 90 films, and earned numerous accolades, including 14 Filmfare Awards. In terms of audience size and income, several media outlets have described him as one of the most successful film stars in the world.

One of India’s leading actresses who goes by the name Nayanthara, played the female lead. She was SBK’s ( as he is affectionately known) badass equal and breathtakingly beautiful. And of course, all of this with a cast of thousands, all of whom perform complicated, visually stunning choreography and a litany of impossible stunts.

The impact of Bollywood’s influence on India’s popular culture is front and center: dance styles, music, clothing…the clubs all reflect this dynamic entertainment genre. It’s exaggerated, vibrant with color and India at its essence. I loved it!
