Start your adventure with the ferry from Auckland — the 40-minute ride across crystal waters sets the tone perfectly: you’re leaving the everyday behind and stepping into pure Kiwi laid-back luxury.
Waiheke is often nicknamed “Wine Island” for good reason: it’s home to dozens of world-class vineyards, each with its own vibe, views, and wines to savor.
The island may be small, but its wine scene is big. With over 30 vineyards dotting the landscape, the island has a reputation as New Zealand’s premier wine destination, particularly for rich, elegant reds and crisp whites.
No matter your vine of choice, there’s a cellar door with your name on it.
Each has its own personality, but they all share one thing: a passion for hospitality. The locals here don’t just pour wine — they welcome you like an old friend.
My Must-Visit Waiheke Wineries
Mudbrick Vineyard and Restaurant
Perched atop a ridge with breathtaking views of the Hauraki Gulf and Auckland skyline, Mudbrick is one of Waiheke’s most beloved and romantic estates.
Known for: Elegant Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet blends, Chardonnay & Pinot Gris.
Food: Two on-site dining experiences — the fine-dining Mudbrick Restaurant and the more casual Archive Bistro — both paired beautifully with local seafood and seasonal fare. We went as a group and enjoyed the “Taste and Learn” experience!
Tastings run daily and you can enjoy wine flights with spectacular sunset views.
Batch Winery
Perched atop one of the highest vineyards on Waiheke Island, Batch Winery is a destination experience blending sweeping views, quality wines, and delicious food in a relaxed yet refined setting.
The Thomas family estate produces around 30,000 bottles a year, focusing on handcrafted wines that truly reflect Waiheke’s coastal terroir. The estate vineyard grows Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, and Syrah, and the winery uses gravity-fed production techniques to treat the grapes gently and preserve flavour.
Unique sparkling wine on-site
Batch is one of the only wineries on Waiheke Island crafting sparkling wine on site using Charmat tanks, making its fizz offerings something special to try during a tasting.
Panoramic views & setting
The elevated location offers gorgeous 360° vistas — from the Waiheke vineyards down to the Hauraki Gulf, Auckland skyline, and even the Coromandel Peninsula — so every visit comes with a picture-perfect backdrop.
Cellar door tastings
You can enjoy a guided tasting of Batch’s core range — whites, reds, and sparkling — led by knowledgeable staff who’ll walk you through the wines and how the island’s microclimate influences each bottle.
Other Notable Mentions Worth Exploring
Even though they’re smaller or a bit more off-the-beaten-path, these are fantastic picks if you have extra time:
Jurassic Ridge – Small family estate with uniquely expressive Syrah & Pinot Gris.
Obsidian – Stylish cellar door not far from Onetangi.
Cable Bay Vineyards – Modern space with sea views and sharable platters.
Man O’ War – Iconic winery on the island’s rugged east end (beautiful but farther afield).
Destiny Bay – Exclusive, private tastings and highly rated wines.
Tips for a Wine Day on Waiheke
Plan ahead: Some wineries require reservations for tastings or dining, especially in peak season.
Getting around: Having a car or joining a vineyard tour can make hopping between estates easier.
Mix food + wine: Many cellar doors pair their wines with local cheeses or gourmet small plates — the Kiwi way of wine tasting!
