Blue on Blue on Blue: Amazing Fethiye and Its Islands

If there is a corner of Turkey that blends ancient history, turquoise seas, forested mountains, and island-dotted horizons, it’s Fethiye.  Tucked along the southwestern part of the country on the famed Turquoise Coast, Fethiye is serene and adventurous, a place for paddling across crystal coves, walking through Lycian ruins and, (one of my favorites) browsing for treasures in bazaars filled with charming shops.

A Harbor City with Ancient Roots

Fethiye’s story stretches back to Telmessos, the city’s ancient name. Carved directly into the cliff face above the town are the Lycian rock tombs, including the iconic Tomb of Amyntas—its columns glowing gold at sunset. Below, the modern marina is filled with sailboats, fishermen, and gulets preparing for their daily or multi-day voyages.

What makes Fethiye special is this blend: modern cafés within reach of 2,400-year-old tombs, boutique hotels nestled beside Roman ruins, and a coastline that has captivated travelers for centuries.

Fethiye’s Food: Simple, Fresh, Unforgettable

Around the marina and in the old town, you’ll find restaurants serving the flavors Fethiye does best:

  • Fresh-caught sea bass, brim and red mullet
  • Meze spreads with haydari, acılı ezme, and roasted peppers
  • Crispy gözleme rolled by hand
  • Pomegranate juice pressed right on the street
  • A glass of rakı at sunset with the harbor glowing gold

Seafood lovers, especially, will feel like they’ve come home.

The 12 Islands: A Cruise Through Blue Paradise

A visit to Fethiye isn’t complete without exploring its famous 12 Islands, a constellation of emerald islets scattered across the sea. I’m not sure I’d recognize every each one we visited but we swam in the Yassıca Islands, a chain of shallow, warm waters that felt, even in October, like private swimming pools.  Göcek’s Hidden Coves are rustic, uninhabitable save for wandering goats and wild rabbits. And Aquarium Bay with its crystal-clear water so transparent you can see every pebble on the seabed.

Fethiye offers the traveler an open invitation to stop, marvel at the blue on blue on blues of the Aegean, swim a little, enjoy a meal whose flavors jump off the plate, to linger over chai, to savor the moment. This is the culture of the country and the allure of this remarkable place on earth.
